ADA Compliant Weight Scale Deadline Ends Soon

Posted by Taylor M. on Jul 20th 2026

In 2024, the U.S. Access Board updated guidelines for accessibility that specifically address medical diagnostic equipment (MDE). These rules outline minimum design criteria for examination and procedure chairs, weight scales, and other diagnostic equipment to ensure accessibility for those with disabilities.

By August 9, 2026 each state and local government entity (e.g. public hospitals, clinics, university health systems) are required to ensure at least 10% of their applicable MDE, including health scales, meet strict Americans with Disability Act (ADA) standards.

ADA-Compliant Health Scales

Rice Lake Weighing Systems makes two health scales that exceed ADA MDE standards. They have low-profile platforms, allowing ease-of-use for those with mobility challenges. Sturdy handrails help provide patients with comfort and confidence while getting their weight taken.

350-ADA-1 Wheelchair Scale

        • 40 in. weighing platform
        • 1:8 gentle ramp slope
        • 35 in. handrail
        • 2 in. edge protection

250-10-2-ADA Bariatric Scale

            • Live handrails
            • 34 in. handrail
            • Comfortable design
            • Slip-resistant surface

Rice Lake 350-ADA-1 wheelchair scales exceed MDE requirements and feature a compact foldable design, making storage and transport easy. The added wheels allow you to move directly to the patient or throughout your facility, wherever the scale is needed.

Rice Lake 250-10-2 bariatric scales also exceed MDE requirements. Integrated handrails provide support and safety while patients are being weighed. Advanced movement compensation technology eliminates errors caused by involuntary movement of unsteady patients. Two heavy-duty rear wheels and patented hinge-joint make it simple and effortless to move, fold and store.
