What is a Washdown Scale?

Posted by Taylor on Mar 17th 2026

Tough industrial environments, especially those that require frequent cleaning and sanitation, require equally tough equipment that are able to stand up to the harsh conditions. They should also reduce contamination build-up and make the overall process of cleaning easier. For weighing processes, this is where washdown scales shine.

What Are Washdown Scales?

Washdown scales are a type of scale used in "washdown" environments. A washdown environment is any area where equipment must undergo cleaning to maintain safety, prevent contamination or remain sanitary. Food production, pharmaceuticals and chemical manufacturing are some industries where these areas are common. Washdown scales must be able to handle these harsh conditions.

Critical components like the load cell and indicator are sealed to prevent unwanted liquids and debris from getting in and causing damage. But it doesn't stop there. Good washdown scales are made in a way that prevents the build-up of contaminants. This is often achieved with design elements like sealed welds, careful selection of materials, open spaces to allow material to flow through and minimizing exposed hardware. The idea is to make the scale as easy to clean as possible. This is why it is important that they use sealed internals, non-corrosive materials, and intuitive design to protect against damage.

Is Washdown The Same As Waterproof?

Every washdown scale is a waterproof scale to a certain degree. Scales made for use in harsh or sanitary environments will include an IP rating that dictates just how "waterproof" or resistant to ingress of liquids and dust the scale is. Careful selection of construction materials, fasteners, sealants and gaskets all help to make a scale waterproof. They go through rigorous testing by certified third-parties, and are ultimately assigned their IP protection rating based on how well they keep out water and debris. The higher the IP rating, the greater the protection.

Some waterproof scales can be cleaned by hand with a washrag and water, while others can be sprayed down with high-pressure from a pressure washer. Although both scales are resistant to water, only one can handle being sprayed down or submerged. IP68 and IP69 rated scales can be washed under pressure and fully submerged for a specified duration of time.

Think of these scales like watches. If you've ever owned a watch, you've likely noticed the "water resistant" or "submersible up to 100 feet". Some watches are protected against getting wet while washing your hands, but can't be dunked into water. Others can be worn in the swimming pool! There is a clear difference in the degree of protection.

Do You Need a Washdown Scale?

Washdown scales are commonly used by businesses operating in the food processing, chemical, pharmaceutical, and petrochemical industries. They are also found anywhere else hygiene (health and safety, product quality, regulatory compliance) are of significant importance.

To help decide if you need a washdown scale, consider the following questions:

  1. Does your industry or target customer demand strict hygiene practices?
  2. Are you producing or packaging food products?
  3. Do you need to maintain a contamination free environment?
  4. Is equipment cleaning and/or sanitation part of your quality process?

If you answered yes to any of the above, washdown scales may be necessary for your operations. They will not only help maintain quality and regulatory standards, but they will also significantly improve cleaning and sanitation processes. They will also last much longer in your environment than non-washdown scales, ultimately saving you money in the long run.
