Frequently Asked Questions

What is scale calibration?

The accuracy of a weighing scale can slip with time, often as a result of impacts, overloading, and even consistent use. Calibrating a scale is the act of verifying and adjusting its accuracy using test standards of a known, documented weight. This ensures the scale is performing as it should and is accurate to the manufacturer's stated specifications.

Why is calibrating a scale important?

A scale or balance that is properly calibrated will produce the most accurate and repeatable results. This is especially important in commercial and research applications, where even the smallest weighing errors can result in lost time, productivity, and profits.

Who needs a NIST-traceable calibration certificate?

NIST-traceable calibration certificates provide documented proof that the scale you purchased is in good working order and that the scale has been calibrated to meet or exceed the manufacturer's specifications. At Scales Plus, we use calibration weights that are certified by an accredited metrology lab. Companies in manufacturing, pharma, food production, research and other industries often require certifications to satisfy the requirements of their quality systems.

I need an ISO certificate. Is this the same thing?

Partially. All ISO certificates are NIST-traceable, but not all NIST-traceable certificates are ISO accredited. ISO accredited reports include additional information and statements that satisfy the requirements of ISO. Learn more about ISO accredited reports.

Are your calibration certificates the same as an NTEP certification?

No. Purchasing our NIST-traceable calibration report for your new NTEP scale does not meet the requirements of most state Weights and Measures Departments. They typically require NTEP (legal-for-trade) scales to be placed into service by a licensed agent of the state, whether it be a state representative or a licensed third-party agency. Calibration must be performed at the location the scale is being placed into service. Our calibration service would be a secondary check of the scale as a verification that the scale is in good working order before you call to have the scale placed into service. Learn more about NTEP certified scales.

Will you calibrate a scale I currently own?

Yes! Customers from all over the country ship their scales and balances to us for preventative maintenance and calibration. Once our technicians have completed the calibration process, your scale is sent back to you with a traceable calibration report that includes as-found and as-left data and critical details about the instrument and calibration process.
