What to Do if Your Digital Scale Has an Error Code

Jun 20th 2025

Just like many electronic devices, digital scales often include diagnostic error codes that will display on the screen when something is wrong. These error codes tell you that something needs to be corrected before using the scale. So what do you do when your scale has an error code?

What is an Error Code?

An error code is displayed on the screen of digital scales when an issue is detected. This notifies you that something is wrong with the scale. The specific numeric or alpha-numeric code corresponds with an error. This makes the process of troubleshooting an issue much quicker.

For example, an OHAUS Scout Error 8.1 refers to a load detection that the balance does not believe should be there. The most common issue is a simple fix, and knowing what that is from the error code makes diagnosis much quicker.

Steps to Correct Your Digital Scale Error Code

The dreaded "Error" message on the display appears. What do you do? If you aren't a scale expert, but consider yourself a DIYer, here are the steps you need to take.

      1. Remove any items on the scale.
      2. Power down the scale and disconnect from the power supply. Let it set for a minute or two and then power it back up. Is the error still there? If so, proceed to the next step.
      3. Refer to the manufacturer's user manual. Look for the troublshooting section. They often include a list of error codes with corresponding issues and potential fixes.
      4. Go through the steps outlined in the manual.
      5. Check to see if the error has been corrected.
      6. If not, try cleaning the scale and correcting any binding issue that might exist.
      7. You can also attempt to calibrate the scale if you're able to access the menu. Sometimes a simple calibration will correct an error.
